Call the Cops. There’s a Criminal in my Computer!

Call the Cops. There’s a Criminal in my Computer!

A common plot of Hollywood thrillers is the “Don’t Answer the Phone” device. In this kind of movie, the babysitter is aware that there is a maniac about to come to kill her or the children. The big moment comes when she gets a phone call from the police who say “The calls are coming from inside the house!” Pretty scary stuff.

But we have a modern day version of “the maniac is inside the house”. The maniacs are actually hiding in the house but not in the closet, not in the basement, not in the attic but in the computer! And it isn’t just happening to an occasional unfortunate victim. These kinds of crimes are happening to thousands of people every day, people like you and me. It’s called cyber crime and it’s an epidemic that law enforcement is putting all the skill and detective work they can muster to try to control.

When you hear a phrase like “cyber crime”, it makes you think of Arnold Schwarzenegger in The Terminator as a heartless android out to create chaos. But cyber criminals are far more elusive than Arnold. They could be any one in your neighborhood or halfway around the world. They don’t need a key to your back door or a tunnel under your house to get in. Cyber criminals can take up residence inside our computers and quietly commit crimes as we sit there enjoying our YouTube selections or having an IM chat with Aunt Edna.

The problem is not that our legal system has not done a good job of defining crimes committed using the internet as crimes. The legal community has all the laws on the books that they need to stop these criminals. The problem comes with finding the criminals and even know when a crime is being committed. But despite the elusive nature of cyber criminals, some of the kinds of crimes that can be committed directly over the internet are pretty scary including…

* Identity theft.
* Fraud.
* Embezzling hundreds, maybe thousands from your bank account.
* Hijacking an elderly person’s Social Security checks.
* Cyber seduction of youth and even children.
* Unauthorized access to your financial information which they can sell to other cyber criminals.
* The downloading of computer viruses and other destructive software that can damage your computer.
* Cyber terrorism.

Amazingly, most of this kind of crime can be happening inside your computer without you ever knowing it is there. The key to success for cyber criminals are these little programs sometimes called “spybots”. A spybot is a tiny program that can take up residence in your computer by hiding in your internet system with cookies and other content that you download when you are surfing the web. These programs can then capture and record your keystrokes and send them back to the cyber crimanl who can capture your secure information from that data. Or they can watch your cyber surfing and learn where you go to help cyber criminals figure out better ways to commit their crimes.

Cyber crime is something we hope our law enforcement professionals will eventually learn how to stop. But because cyber criminals can be anywhere in the world, stay on the run and even change electronic locations of their “headquarters” without ever betraying their physical location or who they are, it’s a amazingly difficult job for our law informant professionals to learn how to find these criminals and to capture them and put them away.

We can help by being ever vigilant about our computers. There are programs we can install that can “lock the front door” of our computers. The two top names in this kind of software are Norton and McAfee but there are dozens more that can do the job just as well. The good news is that these programs can simultaneously watch our emails, monitor for spybots and keep our computer clean of viruses and other internet surprises that can cause so much damage.

So just as we work with neighborhood watch and put locks on our doors even though there are police in our neighborhoods, we have to view cyber crime as a problem that everybody has to work together to stop. By making sure your computer is protected, you take one more victim out of the cycle. And that helps everybody in our quest for a safer internet. 745

Kindle Fire

Kindle Fire

Kindle Fire is an e-reader/tablet hybrid but it’s a bit outdated now. Outdated or not, it has still its usage preference. As we all know, Kindle started out as an eBook reader device, but with the high demands of the consumer asking for more in a gadget, guess they release a pretty much what their audience demand. But with these additional features, they have invited themselves to much bigger competitors in the market. The question is would they compete well with the features they offer?
So, what can we get out of this product?
Appearance. The device has a clean appearance with a minimalist view of design with 2 speakers, power button 3.5 mm headset jack micro USB port found on the bottom. The display is made of Gorilla Glass, which is a highly damage-resistant. It has rubberized back which particularly aids as cushion for fall impact of the device and for much easier to grip but it does not look or feel particularly stylish, but the entire assembly looks solid enough for me. It looks twice as big as I pad thus bigger in size, 7 inch display in high resolution, which precedes ease in reading and watching movies. Color reproduction is good and viewing angles are just as broad as you’d expect.
Performance and battery life. In terms of performance and battery life, it has dual-core 1GHz TI OMAP chip, but here paired with only 512MB of RAM and a mere 8GB of internal storage; meaning it can play movies, stream and download music fast and with ease but has occasional lags during interchanging phase of apps opened. The device supports 802.11b/g/n on 2.4GHz which renders no problem picking up and staying connected to wireless networks. The browser is quick and faster. The Battery life with multiple usage bringing mixed results. Like for rundown movie viewing led to around 5-6 hours of battery life while lighter reading or web browsing mixed with some video watching led to 10-11 hours overall, battery life varies and depends upon the apps that you use or play.
The same old core of purpose as I mention above with this device is the E-READING, the Kindle Fire though is difficult to read in bright day light or on the beach. The Kindle Fire can also handle magazines as well; however the display is just too small to be an enjoyable reading experience. To top it all, Fire also offers COMIC reading; Amazon has a wide variety of collection of comic books available for the Fire.
But what are the lacking features that most of us are looking for in a device? There is no SD slot card or expandable memory which means the data storage is restricted to what is available internally which gives us only 8Gb. But AMAZON provides you with additional storage through Amazon cloud Drive which gives you additional 5Gb free online storage to store anything you want. There are no cameras and no microphone meaning, no video calling available for this device. Moreover, Fire has no access to the Android Market, it lacks the core Google apps such as the Play Store, Google Maps, Gmail and YouTube. Furthermore, it has no Bluetooth which is a little uncomfortable in transferring data wirelessly.
In conclusion, Kindle Fire makes up a pretty decent device for people who still prioritize reading the most than other features available in a tablet. For short, it is still generally an Ebook reader device added with a touch of tablet features such as movie/music streaming and downloading, social hub applications but with boundaries such as video calling. But to compare this to other device such as ipad and Samsung tablet, it still needs more to accomplish. It only has its edge on the eBook reading stuff. The lack in Google features really pulls the device further down, AMAZON wanted to monopolize their product to themselves serving only what’s available on their store directly to their user device which pretty much restrict the users freedom to choose which is best for him/her.

Fanning The Kindle Fire

Fanning The Kindle Fire

Kindle has just released its newest addition to the family, the Kindle Fire. It is twice as fast with double the memory and battery life. This is a product that you can bring absolutely anywhere because it is slim and practically weightless, but at the same time sturdy. With this product, you can download and view more than 22 million shows and movies, listen to any music genre in mp3 and mp4 format and most of all, read magazines, books and even comics. You can also access different applications and games on your Kindle.
Since this has built-in wifi, browsing the internet can be done at top speed already. You can now easily update your Facebook status or tweet your friends about the latest books you are reading. You will also be able to read your emails, since Gmail and Yahoomail are also integrated.
This product has 8GB self storage plus an added unlimited cloud storage that comes for free with your Amazon downloads. This allows you to read your downloaded eBooks, even if you are not connected to the internet. Its 1.2GHz processor and 1GB RAM will provide you with a faster processing and touch response. Its battery can last up to 9 hours of continuous reading time.
The great thing about Kindle Fire is its portability. You can also easily hold this gadget with one hand only. This allows you to read in any position you want. It also uses Paperwhite technology that fools you into thinking that you are reading paper! There is also the Prime Instant Video feature that permits the user unlimited video streaming. It also has Lending Library where you can borrow bestsellers with no fear of due dates and extra charges. Kindle Freetime is also available. This limits the time your child’s use of Kindle, and also restricts the contents he or she can access.
Another benefit that you can get from purchasing this product is its innovative and unique features like the Xray for both movies and books that allows you to explore and uncover random things about the subject with just a simple tap of the screen. The Whispersync technology is an added plus because it takes note of the last thing you saw or read on your Kindle. Do you know that with this Kindle model, you can also get to bring a virtual copy of your documents and pictures everywhere? That is how cool it is!
The things to consider before buying Kindle Fire are the uneven backlighting. This sometimes throws in shadows. It is also a bit heavier than the last model. Another thing is its super sensitive touch response. This is just a temporary thing because you can always adjust your finger pressure and speed to ameliorate this problem. You can only download a limited number of apps for this product. Also, this is not the best buy if you are in the market for an extension of your office. Another downside is that this does not come with a wall charger, so you basically have to charge it using your computer or you can purchase one for an additional cost. If you have any complaints on your Kindle, you can always use Amazon’s 30 day return policy.
Overall, Kindle fire is the best of the Kindle series so far. It may be a bit pricey compared to other similar products available in the market right now, but it is all worth it because you are getting quality for a product you can practically use anywhere. Kindle is continually improving itself, so you know that what you have is the latest technology there is.
Before buying one, you must understand though that this is an e-reader and not an android tablet. This product can be enjoyed by the whole family, even non-readers, young and old alike because it does not limit itself to eBooks only. Kindle Fire is perfect for bookworms, students and people who go on long commute. It is no wonder that you can see lots of Kindle user on long plane flights.

Maximize Your Marketing Dollars With Great Mobile Marketing

Mobile marketing is a tremendous opportunity for businesses to broaden their capacity to reach desired customers. The key, however, is to master the strategies best able to communicate an effective message. Put the tips and suggestions in this article to work today, and you are sure to significantly expand your customer base and increase sales.

If you want to increase your site traffic from users using mobile devices, develop a mobile application for your site, and offer it on your website. Apps are a convenient way for hand-held users to get to a service with one click. There are many tools and sites that can help you to develop your app, so take advantage of that.

Make sure your advertisements work for all types of mobile devices. If your programming is only accessible by one type, like an Android, you will lose out on entire populations of prospective clients from other platforms. Using cross-platform programming is the best method to attract the most customers to your business.

Always supply a call to action. Your customers need to know what they should be doing to purchase from you, and if you do not give them the answer, they will not be purchasing from you any time soon. Tell them you have what they need, and tell them how to get it.

All mobile marketers would do well to remember that mobile marketing is not a typical marketing strategy. In fact, it isn’t really a strategy at all. It’s simply a means of communication. Trying to approach mobile marketing like basic internet marketing just will not work out well for you in the end.

Establish a policy about engaging in social media. Every one on your team should know what kind of interactions are appropriate and where you decide to stop. This will help everyone understand how they can use social media as a professional tool, while most people are used to using cell phones and other devices for their personal use.

Engaging with your customers is incredibly important in mobile marketing, so it’s a good idea if you have some line of contact open with them. Whether they can reach you via a forum, your IM handle, or by some other method, make sure you’re keeping the lines of communication open with your customers.

Conduct SEO on your mobile platform. Concentrate on Google first because that is the search engine that is used to perform the majority of mobile searches. Also work on location-based web pages since search results vary based on where a user is located. Start by performing SEO on terms related to your brand, and branch out from there.

Consider adding advertising to your website that specifically built for the mobile environment. Your traditional web banners are not going to cut it on a mobile device. In fact, if you have optimized your site for a mobile experience, those banners are no longer even visible. There are a lot of great mobile advertising platforms out in the market, including AdMob, iAd and MobClix. Investigate them and choose the right one for you.

There is no disputing the tremendous potential held by mobile marketing. Businesses interested in utilizing this new way of reaching customers must familiarize themselves with the most persuasive, current techniques. Take advantage of the guidance found in this article, and begin reaping the rewards of mobile marketing immediately.

Excellent Advice To Improve Your Mobile Marketing (5)

Excellent Advice To Improve Your Mobile Marketing

The on-the-go nature of mobile marketing, as well as certain technical limitations of the devices most often used to connect to the mobile internet, makes mobile marketing a much different animal than its traditional counterparts. This article will give you some tips that will help you get your message out to all the mobile gadget addicts out there.

Sometimes you have to ride out a storm with your marketing campaign, so remember to sit tight and not to do anything drastic. There will be times when a product takes a dive in popularity or when your customers are too cash-strapped to purchase. Just sit tight and keep doing what you do.

Although the number of mobile users is increasing, that doesn’t mean you can take your mobile marketing campaign outside of its respective niche and just advertise to a larger market. You still need to remain within the confines of your market. You will find that any niche gets larger, but attempting to attract people from outside it is just wasted effort.

All of your mobile marketing messages should include a strong call to action. The call to action is an imperative statement designed to goad your customers into doing something. Remember that this does not have to be a demand for an immediate purchase. Even advising customers to follow a link will serve as an effective call.

Split-test your landing pages to see which one performs better. This is a great tactic to use in your mobile marketing campaign because it allows you to quickly put the better material out there. By creating two unique landing pages and then using HubSpot tools, you can perform an A/B Split Test and find out which page to go with.

Make it very easy for your customers to unsubscribe from receiving your text messages. Many times having the option to reply with the word ‘stop’ will be the easiest way. This will lower any frustration if a customer no longer wants to receive texts. Remember that just because they don’t want a text does not mean they do not want to be a customer.

Failure to make your mobile marketing cross-platform capable, will cost you dearly. The variety of mobile devices available is staggering, and there are multiple platforms to be compatible with. Your ad campaign should target iPhones, Android devices, Blackberry, Windows mobile and tablet devices.

Customer love rewards so reward them just for signing up. Just for signing up give them a coupon for a free item when they come back and purchase something else. Since they are giving you their mobile phone number, reward them with something worthwhile that will keep them coming back.

Make sure you mention your mobile marketing campaign in your other marketing efforts. You could have a link on your website where people can sign up for it, or mention it on your Facebook or Twitter page. If people know about your mobile marketing campaign, they will be more likely to sign up for it.

As you can see from the tips above, mobile marketing isn’t just “mobile + marketing.” It’s a whole new marketing landscape that requires a specialized approach. People who rely on mobile devices are often busy people, so you need to think outside the box and develop unorthodox techniques to get your mobile message seen.

Solid Advice To Integrate Mobile Marketing Into Your Business 3

Solid Advice To Integrate Mobile Marketing Into Your Business

Could mobile marketing be the next great edge in your business promotion? You could find a great set of skills and strategies to put forth in your mobile marketing efforts, but you want to stop first and take note of these great steps that are going to ensure your success in the practice.

Use QR codes on all of your print materials, from business cards to product packaging. This is a great way to give people quick access to all the content you want to provide, from cleaning instructions to alternate uses. You can even have a link to a coupon for future purchases, or a sale page.

Compatibility is crucial. When starting a mobile marketing campaign it is essential that it will display correctly no matter which device your customer is using. There are loyal users of every mobile platform and focusing on only one device limits your customer base. At the very minimum it should be viewable on the 3 biggest devices: Blackberry, iPhone, and Android.

Try to gather as much marketing data about your intended mobile campaign recipients as possible, so that you can target their wants and needs. This is a great way to ensure that the campaign that is going out is something that the recipient actually wants to read. If you do this will will get far fewer ‘Stop’ requests.

Take the time needed to learn how social media works, and how mobile marketing works right along with it. You need to do your research or extract the knowledge from those who already have it. Hire someone if you need to and it will pay off in the long run.

Try to write a campaign article for mobile marketing that is easy to understand, straight to the point, and doesn’t include YELLING THROUGH ALL CAPS! Only use all caps for a call to action. Also avoid over abbreviating your sentences or you’ll end up with copy that looks amateurish and unprofessional.

Use a Multimedia Messaging Service to connect with your customers. If you are unsure if your customers can receive a Multimedia Messaging, ask them if their phones can take photos if they say yes, they can receive a Multimedia Messaging. Using a MMS will enable you to send video messages to you customers.

Use high quality short codes in your mobile marketing efforts! This will ensure that you create your own brand of the short code you use, and you won’t be sharing with another company that could easily utilize the system abusively, causing you issues in the long run. You will encounter a higher price, but that is the price of doing mobile marketing well.

You should research the habits of the customers you reach through mobile marketing and tailor your communications and special offers to their needs. Treat them as a special subset of your customer base and learn all that you can about their buying habits. The offers you send out to cell phones should have a special appeal to your mobile customers.

If you are scared of taking on mobile marketing because it is new, you don’t have to worry. There are millions of people just like you that have found mobile marketing to be quite successful with the right strategies in place. Take the time to read these tips and give yourself a head start.

Great Plains Accounting Support – overview for IT specialist

Great Plains Accounting Support – overview for IT specialist

Great Plains Accounting was popular accounting package for mid-size and small companies back in 1990th. As each product has its life time – it is almost over for Great Plains Accounting – Great Plains Software was purchased by Microsoft and incorporated into its business systems subdivision: Microsoft Business Solutions. Support for Great Plains Accounting was discontinued several years ago. Great Plains Accounting is btrieve based application and typical installation has GPDATA (with all the database files in) and GPCODE (with executable code – this code is copied over the network and is executed on each workstation). Typical problems we see with GPA:
No Techknowledge database for customers. In the case of Great Plains or Great Plains Dynamics/eEnterprise – customer can do self-support. You need to login to Customer Source and open techknowledge database and try to get your problem found there with the solution. Great Plains Accounting techknowledge database is not available for former GPA customer – you should call to your Microsoft Business Solutions Partner to have them access to proprietary information.
Old Hardware. Great Plains Accounting typical system sits on Windows NT 4.0 (sometimes on Windows NT 3.5 or Novell). It was probably installed 5 or more years ago and sits in the very old computer hardware. You may expect (and we see it with our old-timers GPA customers) hard disk failures and RAM failures. We have to do regular fixes – simply reinstalling either code base or database portions or both.
Workstation Locks and crashes – btrieve origin of the system architecture uses brtieve files to store current processes status (batch posting, for example) in the file, controlled by posting workstation. In the case of the crash you often see the error message, like: “Unable to access btrieve file for transaction recovery. Must run Btrieve first.” Multiple scenarios might be applied for recovery. In this exact case you have to delete of rename BTR.TRN file to BTR.OLD – this file controls posting process and will be recreated next time you post
We (and Microsoft Business Solutions itself) strongly recommend you to migrate from Great Plains Accounting to Microsoft Great Plains standard 8.0 (budget version) or Microsoft Great Plains 8.0
Happy supporting! if you want us to do the job – give us a call 1-630-961-5918 or 1-866-528-0577! help@albaspectrum.com
